Most of the software measures currently proposed to the industry have been built intuitively; for instance, most do not even specify their measurement units and quite a few are a mixed bag of inadmissible mathematical operations in terms of scale types. It is not surprising, then, that they bring few real benefits to either software managers or developers. This book looks at the classical metrology concepts from science and engineering, as they constitute the foundation of the measures used in those domains. These concepts are then used ascriteria to:1.) propose an approach to analyze the design of current softwaremeasures (illustrated with case studies), and2.) define a process by which todesign new software measures (illustrated with the design of a software measure that has been adopted as an ISO measurement standard).
