Offshore Wind Energy Generation

Timely reference to fundamental concepts and recent innovations unique to electrical and control systems for offshore wind power The book covers information on wind energy generation, specifically their electrical systems and typical control strategies. It outlines several offshore wind energy–related topics encompassing fundamental and up–to–date subjects. The former aims to provide high–level support for postgraduate research students, academics and professionals working in the field who are willing to go further into specialized topics. The book discusses various energy cornerstones topics in renewable energies, and reviews fundamentals of wind energy conversion and technology. It closes with a general discussion on future trends and engineering challenges for OWF. The next section covers the operation of DFIG and Fully–Rated Converter wind turbines in normal and abnormal conditions. It includes approaches that facilitate understanding of the  phenomena  governing  the  successful  fault  ride–through of both converter–connected wind turbines. Control, stability, reliability, and PQ aspects of both WGs are thoroughy discussed. The middle section of the book reviews OWF architecture issues and describes the technical challenges arising as result of integrating OWF to the power grid. It reviews the protection of OWF and presents every system integration and protection challenge in the form of case studies. The last chapter deals with emerging technologies for OW integration, and reviews current trends in energy storage systems, fault limiters, supercondicting cables, gas–insulated transformers, and more. The chapter includes a section on the state–of–the–art research of OW generation issues in the context of smart grids.  Appendix A concisely describes the topologies, control and operation of the voltage source converter in the context of OWF applications. Appendix B presents a number of worked–out examples well suited for university students, engineers and professionals interested/involved in the field.  Wide–ranging coverage on the integration issues of offshore wind farms and the protection of offshore wind energy systems Up–to–date research on the modelling of doubly fed induction generators (DFIG) and full–converter wind turbines structures, and explanation of the smart grid concept and the role of wind farms within it Comprehensive material on power electronic equipment employed in wind turbines with emphasis on enabling technologies (HVDC, STATCOM, etc.) to facilitate the connection and compensation of large–scale onshore and offshore wind farms A chapter with worked–out examples for teaching purposes and a number of case studies which permit the understanding of the dynamic interaction between HVDC links, offshore wind generation and conventional onshore networks Companion website containing simulation models of the cases
