Modeling and Simulation of Catalytic Reactors for Petroleum Refining deals with fundamental descriptions of the main conversion processes employed in the petroleum refining industry: catalytic hydrotreating, catalytic reforming, and fluid catalytic cracking. Common approaches for modeling of catalytic reactorsfor steady-state and dynamic simulations are also described and analyzed. Aspects such as thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, process variables, process scheme, and reactor design are discussed in detail from both research and commercial points of view. Results of simulation with the developed models are compared with those determined at pilot plant scale as well as commercial practice. Kinetics data used in the reactor model are either taken from the literature or obtained under controlled experiments at the laboratory.Jorge Ancheyta has worked for the Mexican Institute of Petroleum (IMP) since 1989 and is currently a Research and Development Project Leader. He has also worked as professor at undergraduate and postgraduate levels for the School of Chemical Engineering and Extractive Industries at the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico (ESIQIE-IPN) since 1992 and for the IMP posgrade since 2003. Dr. Ancheyta has been working in the development and application of petroleum refining catalysts, kinetic and reactor models, and process technologies mainly in catalytic cracking, catalytic reforming, middle distillate hydrotreating and heavy oils upgrading. He is author and co-authors of a number of patents, books and scientific papers, and has been awarded the National Researcher Distinction by the Mexican government and is a member of the Mexican Academy of Science. He has also been guest editor of various international journals including Catalysis Today, Petroleum Science and Technology, and Fuel. Rafael Maya-Yescas was born in Mexico City on May 12, 1966, Dr. Maya-Yescas received his BSc.in Chemical Engineering, MEng. in Chemical Engineering, and PhD in Chemical Science at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, University College London, U.K. His research interests include biochemical and chemical Reactor Engineering and Control of Chemical Processes. He has been a researcher at the Mexican Institute of Petroleum, Maya Crude Treatment Center. Currently,he is Professor at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, UMSNH. Academic production: 42 papers in reviewed scientific magazines, 10 plenary conferences, 75 presentations in congress. Distinctions: Usual chairman of the National Congress on Research and Teaching of Chemical Engineering, México, Usual evaluator of Research Projects submitted to the National Council of Science and Technology.
