This book provides a history of efforts to increase the number of women in computing and enhance their opportunities in the United States since the Second World War. The focus is primarily on higher education as opposed to the workforce. The study presents statistics about women in computing, an historical overview of higher education for women (including science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computing education), and background material on the history of careers for women in science and engineering. The study profiles various STEM organizations (SWE, AWIS, WEPAN, MentorNet) and various computing organizations (ACM-W, CRA-W, NCWIT) that have contributed to the broadened participation of women in computing. The work sets these developments in the context of both developments within computing and in the larger society, such as the civil rights and women's rights movements.
