This edited collection provides a highly accessible and engaging examination of the rhetoric and ideology of the UK Left, while offering a novel perspective on the challenges facing the Labour Party after Ed Miliband. Following its second consecutive general election defeat in May 2015, the UK Labour Party was at a crossroads. This predicament was exemplified by the subsequent leadership campaign, in which the three mainstream candidates were unexpectedly eclipsed by the veteran left-winger, Jeremy Corbyn. The contributors argue that Corbyn’s appeal is based primarily on his ability to perform a recognisable form of left-wing politics, and to do so with (apparent) authenticity and sincerity. This book examines Labour’s communication difficulties, paying particular attention to the interplay between rhetoric and institutions and, relatedly, to the opportunities and constraints that shape the performance of leadership.
