This book explains how we can exploit the capability of today’s silicon technology to design radiating structures (antennas). In the past, it was not possible to implement on-chip radiating structures due to the low speed of transistors and the large size of antennas. With today’s silicon technology, it is possible to implement chips that operate in a frequency range of several hundred GHz, at which range antennas can be implemented easily, directly on the silicon chip.

As an example of a large-scale radiating integrated circuit, this book introduces the technique of Near-Field Direct Antenna Modulation (NFDAM). Unlike conventional transmitter architectures where signals are modulated before the antenna, NFDAM transmitters generate information by directly modulating the antenna’s electromagnetic near-field boundary conditions. In these systems, a single antenna can be used to transmit independent information to different directions simultaneously.  This book will also introduce a novel, convex optimization technique for designing large-scale radiating integrated circuits.
