This volume presents a set of peer-reviewed papers following the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on atmospheric boundary layers held in Dubrovnik, Croatia,18-22 April 2006 at which 57 researchers from 21 countries and 4 continents participated. The programme consisted of 3 introductory talks, 9 key lectures, and 27 regular presentations divided into thematic sessions: ‘Nature and theory of turbulent boundary layers’; ‘Boundary-layer flows: modelling and applications to environmental security’; ‘Nature, theory and modelling of boundary-layer flows’; ‘Air flows within and above urban and other complex canopies; air-sea-ice interaction’. The volume reflects all the above topics and can be recommended as a modern state-of-the-art summary in the field under consideration. A pleasant reason to arrange this event in April 2006 was the 70th birthday of Professor Sergej Zilitinkevich (born on 13 April 1936 in St.Petersburg, Russia).
