This is the first edited collection to examine politeness in a wide range of diverse cultures. Most essays draw on empirical data from a wide variety of languages, including some key-languages in politeness research, such as English,and Japanese, as well as some lesser-studied languages, such as Georgian. FRANCESCA BARGIELA-CHIAPPINI is Honorary Associate Professor in the Centreof Applied Linguistics, University of Warwick, UK. She has a long-standing research interest in intercultural communication and intercultural pragmatics. Recent publications include an edited volume on 'Face, Communication and Social Interaction' (2009) and a special journal issue on 'Face in Interaction' (2010), both with Michael Haugh. DÁNIEL Z. KÁDÁR is Research Fellow in the Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Associate Professor in Asia University, Taiwan. His main fields of interest include linguistic politeness, sociopragmatics, and the sociocultural development of politeness in the East Asian region. His recent publications include volumes suchas 'Politeness in East Asia' (with Sara Mills) and 'Historical and Contemporary Chinese Politeness' (with Yuling Pan) as well as papers in international journals.
