The volumes in this series, Mutiny at the Margins: New Perspectives on the Indian Uprising of 1857, will take a fresh look at the revolt of 1857 from a variety of original and unusual perspectives, focusing in particular on traditionally neglected socially marginal groups, and geographic areas which have hitherto tended to be unrepresented in studies of this cataclysmic event in British imperial and Indian historiography. The Mutiny at the Margins series differs greatly from the earlier books on 1857’s Indian Uprising in its broad but detailed scope. The essays in the series are much longer and include not only entirely novel research by new scholars, but original essays by famous and distinguished historians of 1857, such as Rajat Ray and Gautam Bhadra, who have not published material elsewhere on the occasion of the anniversary.  The volumes in the Series are organised thematically and offers perspectives that are only glimpsed in the existing works on 1857 and subjects them to an in-depth exploration. The Mutiny at the Margins series is unique in its detailed attention towards Muslim experiences and attitudes regarding the Uprising; something that is lacking in the other anniversary publications. In these, and other ways, this new series attempts a shift in the paradigm of writing about the Uprising of 1857. Muslim, Dalit and Subaltern Narratives (Volume 5), addresses the role of marginal and Muslim groups respectively. Exploring minority perceptions of the Uprising, including dalit narratives and the use of 1857 in their invented histories. The second half of the volume looks into the response and involvement of different Muslim social groups, from civil servants, philosophers and logicians to the Mujahidin, as well as exploring the experience of indigenous participants in their own words.
