All memories invoke imagined pasts, personal and social, local, national and beyond. But do the ways we remember share a common imaginary? In seeking to interpret Scottish culture in the recent past as a series of encounters with modernity, this highly original study draws on a wide range of sources – Enlightenment thought, documentary film, popular fiction, and especially photography –to explore relationships between perceptions of place, belonging and identityin one nation. The analysis adopts a broadly sociological approach, but its range lends equal appeal to social historians, cultural geographers, and particularly those pursuing visual or memory studies.
