Large multivariate datasets in the biological and related sciences are now commonplace. With increasing interest in multi-omics (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics etc.) technologies and consequently greater investment in related scientific research programs, there is a need to publish a text covering pattern recognition strategies. The book will be woven around real world pattern recognition case studies, often involving quite large and complex datasets and will approach pattern recognition in a statistical way emphasizing the importance and difficulty of validating models. It is intended that discussions onmany methods that are common in biology and applicable to biological analytical chemistry data but are rarely known in the chemometrics or analytical chemistry community will be included. In addition, it will be illustrated by case studies from a wide variety of sources including biology, materials chemistry, pharmaceuticals, forensics and environmental science.
