This book examines the role of home states in the development of Islam in Western Europe, as well as the ways by which religion is used by home states to promote ties with their citizens and their descendants abroad. Focusing on interstate cooperation and the interests of home states in the governance of Islam in Western European countries, the author's research employs a comparative perspective that covers the two home states with the largest diaspora populations in Europe, Turkey and Morocco. The volume identifies and explains the political and foreign policy interests that have motivated state actors on both sides of the Mediterranean, while examining the structural effects that these forms of interstate cooperation in religious affairs have had and will continue to have on the evolution of Islam in Western Europe.
