This book focuses on the description of several biomedical applications made possible today by materials and related actuation technologies. It begins withan introduction to electroactive polymers as smart actuation materials. The first section is dedicated to conjugated polymers and their various uses, such as in implantable devices. Sections 2 and 3 focus on ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMC) and polymer gels, respectively. The final sections (four and five) deal with piezoelectric and electrostrictive polymers and dielectric elastomers, respectively.
