As power distribution systems age, the frequency and duration of consumer interruptions will increase significantly. The fundamentals of the design of reliable utility, industrial, and commercial power distribution systems is essential for society because of its complete dependence on a reliable power supply to maintain life activities (e.g., computers, lighting, heating, cooling, etc.). Society must be proactive to minimize the high costs associated with power outages (e.g., $ 10 billion for the last major blackout). It is necessary to consider the cost of power outages when making design decisions for new and existing power distribution systems as well as to have the ability to make quantitative ‘cost-versus-reliability’ trade-off studies. Almost all existing books on reliability do not contain any material on the cost of outages and the methodologies required in trade-off studies required for operation of economical reliable distribution systems. This publication fills the huge void by means of a highly innovative approach applied to practical problems found in the electric distribution industry.
