Award-winning author and educator Linda Darling-Hammond examines the characteristics of successful educational leadership programs, and offers concrete recommendations to improve the 500+ programs nationwide. If implemented, the suggested changes will result in a greater number of highly qualified, thoughtful, and innovative educational leaders. In a study funded by the Wallace Foundation, Darling-Hammond and a team of researchers size-up eight principal development programs. Their research reveals what effective programs look like, and what skills and knowledge participants in these programs gain. Some of the program components and design features identified in exemplary programs are: rigorous recruitment, close ties with schools in the community, and a strong emphasis on the cutting-edge theories of instructional and transformational leadership. The authors also look at the differences between the programs--shedding light on the effectiveness of myriad approaches and models. They compellingly analyze student outcomes, and include rich case studies and student voices on various aspects of the programs--recruitment, internships, mentoring, and coursework. The eight leadership pre-service and in-service programs examined are at the following colleges, universities, and school districts: Bank Street College (NYC), Delta State University (MS), University of Connecticut, University ofSan Diego, Hartford (CT) School District, Jefferson County (KY) Public Schools, Region 1 in New York City, and the San Diego City Schools.
