This book presents theoretical results related to the analysis of complex networks in general and applications thereof to synthetic and real world networks. The presented chapters are balanced between classical and novel approaches and present, e.g., algorithms to compare and classify graphs, determine the entropy or energy of graphs and study the connection between properties of complex networks and biological phenomena. Special emphasize is given to the fact that the availability of huge amounts of data, e.g, in chemistry, biology or medicine, require novel approaches because of the noise present in the data or the size of networks under investigation demanding for efficient algorithms thatare able to produce results that are statistically significant. The major goal of the book is to advocate the idea that theoretical as well as applied results are needed to enhance our knowledge and understanding about networks in general and as representation for a, e.g., biological problem.
