An exploration of how empowerment, lifelong learning and social inclusion areclosely connected to the concept of recovery from mental illness, showing howmental health services in general need to restructure to enable people with the lived experience of mental illness to lead a meaningful life with and beyond the illness. PETER RYAN Professor of Mental Health at Middlesex University, UK, and previous to that was Head of Training at the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health. He is Chair of ENTER Mental Health, a European research and training network, and has been a WHO Europe consultant in mental health since 2006. He has published four previous books, most recently 'Occupational Stress and the Management of Violence'. SHULA RAMON Professor of Mental Health Research at the University of Hertfordshire, UK. With a background of researching mental health in Europe, she is currently managing two research projects, on shared decision making in psychiatric medication management, and on domestic violence and mental health in Europe. She has published 11 books, most recently on 'Cutting Edge Issues in Comparative Social Work and Social Policy'. TIM GREACEN Director of the Maison Blanche Research Laboratory in Paris,France,and Research Coordinator for the ENTER Mental Health European Network. Co-founder of ESPAS, a centre for psychological support for people with HIV, as well as the City of Health, a health information platform in central Paris, he is a recognised figure in France in the field of patients' rights and user participation in health services.
