Neurovascular diseases and conditions, and their associated risk factors, represent a significant cause of cognitive diability in the United States and throughout the world. In the USA alone there are 750,000 new strokes each year, representing the number one cause of disabilty in the country. Hypertension, found in approximately 50 million Americans, has been shown to be associated with alterations of cognitive function, even in the abscence of stroke and dementia. Recent studies of neurovascular disease have now revealed that neuropscyhological function may be a more sensitive measure of brain integrity than coordination, motor or sensory function and correlates will with functional outcomemeasures. There is no recent text focusing on the cognitive syndromes associated with this range of neurovascular diseases and systemic causes of vascular-related cognitive changes New medical technology (drugs and devices) has improved patient survival, so that matters of cognitive outcomes are more relevant than ever There are an increasing number of patients being treated by healthcare professionals INDICE: Introduction.- Historical Perspective.- Neurovascular Geography ofBehavioral Function: A Primer.- Ischemic and Intracerebral Hemorrhagic Stroke.- Cerebral Aneurysms and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.- Brain Arteriovenous Malformation and Other Vascular Anomalies.- Vascular Cognitive Impairment.- VascularDementia.- CADASIL and MELAS.- Carotid Artery Occlusion and Stenosis: Diseaseand Treatment (CEA, Bypass, Stenting).- Moya Moya Disease.- Cardiac Arrest.- Congestive Heart Failure/Heart Transplantation.- Cardiac Surgery.- Pulmonary Disease/Lung Transplantation.- Diabetes and Hypertension.- Collagen Vascular Disease (Lupus, Sjogren’s).- Neurovascular Disease and Depression.- Mechanisms of Stroke Recovery and Brain Plasticity.- Functional MRI and Stroke Recovery.- Pharmacological Treatment of Deficits.- Neuropsychological Rehabilitation.- Clinical Trial Design.
