South Africa has moved from being a pariah state, epitomizing the extreme of racial segregation and prejudice, to a democratic, multiracial nation. This metamorphosis has initiated transformations on many fronts. The present issue brings together research that has investigated change and obstacles to change inintergroup relations in South Africa. The research reflects on theories of intergroup behavior that are current in the international literature, and highlights issues of interest when considering a transformation in which the formerly subordinate group becomes the politically dominant majority.
