Despite continuing progress in developing more efficient algorithms for operations research, the problems that arise in practice often are too large and complex to be solved to optimality. Therefore, heuristic methods are frequently used to search efficiently for a very good, but not necessarily optimal, solution. This has led to the development of several powerful metaheuristics, whichare general solution methods that provide both a general structure and strategy guidelines for developing a specific heuristic method to fit a particular kind of problem.
