Despite continuing progress in developing more efficient algorithms for operations research, the problems that arise in practice often are too large and complex to be solved to optimality. Therefore, heuristic methods are frequently used to search efficiently for a very good, but not necessarily optimal, solution. This has led to the development of several powerful metaheuristics, whichare general solution methods that provide both a general structure and strategy guidelines for developing a specific heuristic method to fit a particular kind of problem. Over the last decade or so, metaheuristics have grown into oneof the most prominent areas of operations research in terms of both the amount of research being done and the importance of the application of these techniques. The first edition of the Handbook of Metaheuristics was a trailblazing volume. At that time, there were no books covering metaheuristic strategies in any systematic manner The second edition aims to pick up with the lastest developments in the field. Some of the new topics to included include: Simulated Annealing, Genetic Algorithms, Neural Nets, Tabu Search INDICE: Simulated Annealing.- Tabu Search.- Variable Neighborhood Search.-Scatter Search and Path-relinking: Fundamentals, Advances, and Applications.-Genetic Algorithms.- A Modern Introduction to Memetic Algorithms.- Genetic Programming.- Ant Colony Optimization: Overview and Recent Advances.- Advanced Multi-Start Methods.- Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedures: Advances, Hybridizations, and Applications.- Guided Local Search.- Iterated Local Search:Framework and Applications.- Large Neighborhood Search.- Artificial Immune Systems.- A Classification of Hyper-heuristic Approaches.- Metaheuristic Hybrids.- Parallel Meta-heuristics.- Reactive Search Optimization: Learning while Optimizing.- Stochastic Search in Metaheuristics.- An Introduction to Fitness Landscape Analysis and Cost Models for Local Search.- Comparison of Metaheuristics.
