The purpose of this book is to highlight the importance of different forms of ‘trust’ in the response of both European authorities and national governments to moments of crisis like the most recent turmoil in European financial markets.

The argument is made in two stages. The first stage is theoretical and explores the many different manifestations ‘trust’ as well as the role these different kinds of trust can play in conditioning both how European officials condition their assistance, and how national governments respond to conditionality. The second stage is empirical and provides two paired comparisons of countries that received assistance both inside (Ireland and Greece) and outside (Latvia and Hungary) the Euro area.  The penultimate chapter then expands the empirical cases to include a range of other countries that received support.  The conclusion reflects on the broader implications of the argument for European governance.
