The book explores case studies of sustainable development implementation in avariety of industries, ranging from the petroleum industry to water processing industry. The volume is very valuable to practicing chemical engineers and students of the field as well, for it teaches by example, not theory. It has a varied international authorship, therefore making it very appealing to audiences worldwide. The editors cover innovations quantitatively contributing to sustainable development for People, Planet and Prosperity, focusing on the micro (molecules, unit operations, processes) to the macro (industrial sites, value chains, regions, the world).Jan Harmsen is principal process developer at Shell. He has 29 years on industrial experience at various positions in Shell: notably exploratory research, development, process design, and chemicals manufacturing. He is also since 1997 part-time Hoogewerff professor Sustainable Chemical Technology at State University Groningen, The Netherlands. Joe Powell joined the Chemical Development Department at Shells Westhollow Technology Center (Houston) in 1988, where he has led major R&D programs. Dr. Powell has been granted 39 U.S. patents and several industry awards, including the Arthur Dehon Little Award for Chemical Engineering Innovation (AIChE 1998). Joe obtained his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1978, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in 1984.
