The purpose of this pocket guide is to provide an introduction to the SDH (and SONET) technology. It explains the multiplexing structures and methodologiesused by these technologies designed around 1990. It also explains the evolution towards the Next Generation SDH/SONET equipment and networks that support the transport of packet based information developed around 2000. Many SDH/SONETnetworks are designed using a functional model, the relation between the atomic functions of this model and the multiplexing methodologies are shown. The final chapter introduces the most recent development providing packet switched transport networks PSTN.
