The aim of this volume is to examine the present state of knowledge on cognitive aging and the development of a shared multidisciplinary agenda for future work in this area. It is organized around five cross-cutting issues: the current state of cognitive theory as it relates to processes of ageing; what is known about parameters of cognitive ageing in key dimensions of cognitive functioning; methodological critiques of research designs on which our current knowledge base rests; suggestions for alternative research designs and statistical analyses; and suggestions for future directions to grow and develop the field. By building upon the recommendations of The Ageing Mind (National Research Council, 2000), this volume will comprehensively examine the ‘future of cognitiveaging research’ by critically evaluating the practical, methodological and theoretical issues that are current in the field of cognitive ageing research.
