Although several books have been published in this field, there is not an advanced book focusing on coordination chemistry with systematic introduction of basic knowledge, application technology and the latest developments. Huangs book fills the gap. The book consists two parts: fundamentals and applications. In the first part (fundamentals: chapters 1- 8), Huang arms readers with systematic basic aspects of rare earth coordination chemistry. Topics include the configuration of rare earth elements at ground states, ²-diketonate lanthanide complexes, rare earth complexes with carboxylic acids, polyaminopolycarboxlic acids and amino acids, the coordination chemistry of rare earth alkoxides, aryloxides, and hydroxides, organometallic lanthanide chemistry, rare earth coordination chemistry with fullerene as ligands, N-based rare earth complexes and rare earth polyoxometalate complexes. While in the second part (applications: chapters 9-14), Huang presents the latest development in the applications of rare earths. Lanthanide-based magnetic molecular materials is introduced in chapter 9, followed by the introduction of gadolinium complexes as MRI contrast agents for diagnosis. Chapter 11 covers photoluminescence and electroluminescence based on lanthanide complexes in visible range. Near-infrared (NIR) luminescence from lanthanide complexes is introduced in chapter 12. The author gives the introduction of chemical and biological applications of luminescent rare earth complexes in chapter 13. End-of-chapter covers surface coordination chemistry of rare earth nanomaterials.
