Understanding temperament has the potential to better inform treatment and intervention choices as well as promote awareness for qualities that are somewhat malleable. This newest book in the Essentials of Psychological Assessment series will provide practitioners and students with a ready reference for understanding temperament qualities and traits and utilizing related temperament assessment instruments effectively and appropriately. A temperament assessment may be performed in a wide variety of clinical settings by psychiatrists, clinical and school psychologists, counselors, neuropsychologists, and others, such as in pediatric practice, early childhood risk screening, couples counseling, addictions therapy, rehabilitation psychology, coaching, and more. The author will briefly discuss the history of temperament assessment and issues related to assessment across instruments, and provide an overview of clinical applications of temperament assessments. There are nearly 30 instruments in the U.S. that directly measure temperament qualities for adults or children and comparison tables of the qualities of these measures will be provided.Dr. Diana Joyce is an Associate Scholar in the School Psychology Program at the University of Florida with licensure as a psychologist and school psychologist. She has taught numerous assessment courses and supervises graduate student practica work across four county school districts and several clinic sites. Her research and publications have included studies of temperament qualities of gifted children as well as temperament characteristics of students with conduct disorders.
