Everyone from chemists and biologists to clinicians and students will gain anappreciation of the critical role that particle interactions have in several major areas of biological sciences (cell signaling in tissue engineering, cell-cell interactions in the inflammatory response), medicine (uptake of bioengineered nanoparticles containing therapeutic drugs), toxicology ( potential cytotoxicity of pollutants), and science and technology (self-assembly in radio frequency identification, RFID technology). The book emphasizes particle interactions occurring over a broad spectrum of the biological sciences and nanotechnology. The particles of interest range in size from the nanometer (e.g., cations involved in transport and uptake by organelles), to the tens of nanometers (e.g., soluble and immobilized proteins), to the micron (e.g., whole cells), to the milliscale of tissues and processed materials.Dr. Michael King is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering at the University of Rochester. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame in chemical engineering. While a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, King received an NIH National Research Service Award to support research in the field of bioengineering. King is a Whitaker Investigator, a James D. Watson Investigator of New York State, and is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award. Dr. David Gee is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Rochester. He was previously a postdoctoral researcher and, subsequently, Research Engineer at the Institute for Advanced Technology at The University of Texas at Austin where he specialized in impact mechanics and computational solid mechanics.
