Smoothing of multivariate data: density estimation and visualization

Klemel, Jussi

The book begins with an introduction to various visualization tools that can be used to construct representations of multivariate functions, sets, data, and scales of multivariate density estimates. Next, the author provides an extensive review of the basic mathematical tools that are needed to analyze asymptotically the behavior of multivariate density estimators, and also describes the most effective algorithms for visualizing and estimating multivariate densities. The book concludes with a toolbox of multivariate density estimators, including anisotropic kernel estimators, minimization estimators, multivariate adaptive histograms, and wavelet estimators. A completely hands-on experience isencouraged, as all of the discussed applications and models can be easily duplicated through the R packages available via the books related Web site, encouraging a ‘copy-and-paste’ itneractivity for the reader. The end of most chapters contain exercises as well as a Code section, which provides short instructions for use of the software.
