With the introduction of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) and electrospray ionization (ESI) techniques in the late 1980s, mass spectrometry (MS) has become a powerful tool for polymer characterization. However, because of the diversity in polymer chemistry, there is no universal MS approach for polymer analysis. The major challenege in using MS to characterize a polymeric system lies in developing a suitable sample preparation protocol tailoredto that specific poymer. Great care must also be taken in interpreting the MSresults. This book describes the principles of polymer mass spectrometry and discusses the best practices in using MS for polymer characterization. It emphasizes that a different skill set than that used for biomolecule analysis is required for polymer analysis and characterization. At present, though, most MSpractitioners are trained in biomolecule MS laboratories. When they find jobsin polymer industries or in pharmaceutical companies dealing with polymeric materials, such as they characterization of polymer-labeled antibodies or drugs, they need to be educated in polymer MS. The authors of each chapter describethe general principle of a technique or method, its attributes in polymer cahracterization, its shortcomings, examples of applications and experiments, trickes and special attention required for experiments, and future work on further developing and improving the technique or method. For those readers who wantto read reviews of the literature, there will be an appendix of articles grouped according to type of polymer.
