Natural products research is a dynamic discipline at the intersection of chemistry and biology concerned with isolation, identification, structure elucidation, and chemical characteristics of naturally occurring compounds such as pheromones, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and enzymes. Comprehensive Natural Products III reviews the accumulated efforts of chemical and biological research to understand living organisms and their distinctive effects on health and medicine and to stimulate new ideas among the established natural products research community.  The previous two editions of Comprehensive Natural Products were well received by the community. However, there have been many advances made in this area since the publication of the previous edition in 2010. A new edition is therefore both imperative and timely and it will bring to light the many promising developments and future directions of natural products research. The new edition will present up-to-date information in a scholarly and critical style, providing a point of entry to the literature for advanced graduate students and practicing scientists from multiple fields, including chemistry, biology, biochemistry, plant science and medicinal chemistry. Comprehensive Natural Products III will include a comprehensive set of topics that update or complement the previous two editions of this work, including recent advances in cofactor chemistry, structural diversity of natural products and secondary metabolites, enzymes and enzyme mechanisms and new bioinformatics tools. The structure will be revised to reflect current trends in natural products research. For example, the contents of volumes from the previous edition such as Chemical Ecology and Cofactors will be trimmed and/or combined with other volumes to reflect the maturation of these research topics and the shifting focus of the field.  Volumes such as Enzymes and Enzyme Mechanisms will be subject to a more complete overhaul due the rapid progress in those areas.  Two new volumes covering developments at the forefront of natural product research will be commissioned; possible subjects include synthetic biology of natural products, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites in plants, the microbiome, metagenomics and new bioinformatics methods. Chapter authors will be encouraged to use high quality pictures, graphs and tables to illustrate their chapters. In the electronic edition, each chapter will include hyperlinked references and further readings as well as cross-references to related articles in the encyclopedia and other Elsevier books and journals. Authors will also be encouraged to use multimedia widgets, including 3D-viewers, videos and database linking. Comprehensive: Provides readers with an in-depth review of current natural products research and a critical insight into the future direction of the field, offering them with a 'one-stop', comprehensive resource for access to a wealth of information to fully support their research and activities in this areaReputation: The new edition will bridge the gap in knowledge by covering developments in the field since the second edition published in 2010. The new edition should match the impressive reputation of the previous edition as the go-to reference in the natural products fieldClearly structured: Meticulously organized, articles are split into 7 sections on key topics to allow students, researchers and professionals to find relevant information quickly and easilyInterdisciplinary: Chapters written by academics and practitioners from various fields and regions will ensure that the knowledge within is easily understood by and applicable to a large audienceMultimedia Features: Hyperlinked references and further readings, cross-references and widgets will allow readers to easily navigate a wealth of information. Inclusion in CMSCE will ensure that content remains perpetually up-to-date, allowing readers to access the latest authoritative information immediately INDICE: 1. Structural Diversity of Natural Products and Secondary Metabolites a. Major natural products families and biosynthesis 2. Structural Diversity of Natural Products and Secondary Metabolites b. Terrestrial, marine, and prokaryotic sources of natural products and chemical biology; (Producing organisms, structural analyses, and biosynthetic pathways.
