This book will explore the complex issues surrounding the management of cleftlip and palate in the Developing World. The text aims to provide information and guidelines to two groups: those in the Developing World setting up programmes of cleft lip and palate care, and those Western clinicians delivering carein that context usually on short visits. The book is multidisciplinary in nature, and thereby multi-authored, demonstrating the role of all members of the team, not just surgeons. In each of the areas of clinical practice, the authors explore typical care in the West with a detailed description as to differences in the Developing World, but with practical suggestions as to how the gap may be narrowed. The book contains contributions from Charity Organisations engaged in sending support to many areas of the world. The cross-cultural implications for teams working from the Developed World in the Developing World are addressed. This book is appropriate reading for all those involved in multidisciplinary cleft lip and palate teams in the Developing World but especially those teams who have or are planning to have a commitment to develop services in that environment. It is of value for charities raising funds for programmes inthe Developing World. There are significant research questions, pertaining tochild and adolescent development, facial growth and its potential distortion because of surgery, the nature and timing of surgery in relation to facial growth and speech, psychosocial well-being of children born with this condition in the context of limited resources and opportunity for treatment, learning difficulties, the impact of cleft palate on hearing and ENT conditions, and for basic scientists in the field of genetics. Furthermore it will be very helpful for health service providers in the Developing World in raising the level of their awareness with a commitment to sustainable provision of services.
