The framework for industry is quite different from graduate school or an undergraduate program. The goals are different and less defined, expectations are complex, communication may often be unarticulated, and the problems are non-linear and often chaotic. The landscape for success is vastly different and constantly changing. A graduate program today will be similar to one 20 years ago, perhaps with some course changes, but the same cannot be said about industry. This book lays out the landscape of the technology industry that knowledge workers will see, identifies key landmarks and milestones in this landscape, andsuggests an array of tools that a new graduate will find useful in preparing for his or her career and making decisions about his/her role in the industry. This book provides insight into the new graduate in assessing various companies and identifying those whose culture is in tune with oneself, where one might have the best chance of thriving.Ranjana Ghosh has spent more than 12years in the industry in India and USA, working on operations research applied to a wide set of areas including transportation, chemical industry, aviation and defense. As part of her role, she hasbeen engaged in developing technologies for the aerospace sector and in helping develop technology strategies for an increasingly dynamic aerospace market.Sanat Mohanty has a PhD in Chemical Engineering and works in R&D and in technology management at 3M. As part of his role he has been involved in scoping ofnew technologies and understanding their development in a variety of market environments, including consumer, health care, transportation, and industrial. Dr. Mohanty has been exploring how technology development processes can affectprospects of commercialization and how technology affects society. His role also includes considerable interaction with graduating engineers and orientation of new graduates in the industry.
