Introduction to Statistical Engineering was first published by BookForce UK in October of 2006. Before that it was published as an online resource and usedas a textbook by students at the Industrial Research Unit at Newcastle University. It starts with a clear description of the nature of variability and somebasic statistical methods, including cumulative frequency distributions such as Binomial, Poisson, Normal and Chi-squared distribution. Control and cusum charts, sampling inspection, significance tests, analysis of variance and linear regression are covered in the next chapter on production. A section on engineering design goes into details about variance synthesis, factors of safetly, tolarances and the future. A research and development section discusses the design of experiments, evolutionary operation, multiple regression and further statistical methods, before chapter six covers a bit about the background of measurement and statistical computing. The book explores wider issues in the last two chapters, namely management and training. Topics include quality planning and organisation, directing the quality function, and controlling the quality function. The whole book emphasises practical application and offers guidelines, a periodical, statistical tables, supplementary references, and suggestedfurther reading, useful for the practising engineer requiring further information.
