This book was written from the belief that in order to write proofs, one needs to read finished proofs, studying both their logic and their grammar. Placing the proofs into the context of geometry's history adds an important component in that it shows the reader that proof writing is crucial to the job of a mathematician. This book focuses on various aspects of geometry by studying the work of geometers, in addition to Euclid and Hilbert, in chronological order. The chronological order of the content helps readers appreciate and better understand the relevance of geometry within the overall development of mathematics throughout history. This technique allows instructors to insert appropriate historical events/topics in mathematics that are relevant to the geometric topics of interest. Portions of the text are formatted similarly to a standard geometry book, while others resemble a text on the history of mathematics. The uniqueness of this book is that these two aspects are intertwined to introduce readers to the development of geometry from the early Greek days to modern times. Each chapter has a short introduction that organizes what students will belearning. The exercises are grouped by difficulty level as basic concept checks, basic to intermediate proofs, and then interesting proofs. This structure allows instructors to customize courses as needed. The last chapter, Modern Topics, acts as a supplement for advanced students without any loss of continuity.Michael L. O'Leary, PhD, is Associate Professor of Mathematics at the Collegeof DuPage in Glenn Ellyn, Illinois. He is a Member of the American Mathematical Society, the Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Mathematics, and the Mathematical Society of America. He received his PhD in Mathematics from the University of California, Irvine in 1994.
