While the risk of psychiatric illness during pregnancy appears to be equivalent to the risk at any other time in a woman's life, the risk in the immediate postpartum time period is dramatically increased, particularly in women with a history of a pre-existing psychiatric disorder. This natural period of risk provides a target for researchers to measure and identify the biological mechanisms involved, providing data about the period of risk and about relapse in psychiatric disorders. The NIH defines a biomarker as a characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological processes, pathogenic processes, or pharmacologic responses to a therapeutic intervention. Identifying biomarkers indicative of postpartum psychiatric illness will allow targeted interventions to prevent the onset of illnesses and allow intermittent rather than chronic use of psychiatric medications during and after pregnancy. Biomarkers of Postpartum Psychiatric Disorders provides an up-to-date reference of the current research of biomarkers for psychiatric disorders including major depressive disorder, OCD and bipolar disorder occurring in the immediate postpartum time-period. This book is the only reference on the market that synthesizes and interprets the available data; reviewing clinical phenotypes, genetic literature hormonal contributions, immunology, epigenetics and neuroimaging. Identifies epigenetic, hormonal, immunological, and neuroimaging biomarkersProvides biomarkers for depression, OCD, and psychosisIncludes clinical phenotypes for psychiatric disordersDiscusses future research and directions of the field INDICE: SECTION 1: POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION 1.
