Evolutionary psychology seeks to understand psychological and mental traits as the products of natural selection. It is an interdisciplinary subject, informed by psychology, sociobiology, anthropology and ethology, with books and authors travelling across the boundaries of the various fields.

Evolutionary Psychology: Environments, Genes, and Time is an adoptable textbook that seeks to strike a sensible balance between depth and breadth. It is less encyclopaedic than its key competitors, but it delves more deeply into some of evolution’s most important concepts and it adopts an analytical rather than evangelical tone, especially when addressing controversial topics.

The book is very student-friendly. Pelham’s writing style is casual and engaging, but it doesn’t gloss over over important technical details. He explains difficult concepts such as PCR and genotype-environment interactions in simple terms, using metaphors than students can easily grasp. ‘Big picture’ text boxes will address interesting questions that either fly in the face of conventional academic thinking, or show how an understanding of evolution is necessary when addressing difficult questions.

Finally, the book comes with a comprehensive testbank that the author has written himself. Pelham rightly notes that most testbanks are of poor quality (because they are often written by graduate students), but the author has a great deal of expertise in psychometrics, testing and measurement, and he has put this expertise to good use in developing and refining an MCQ exam bank that will be made available to all adopters of the book. He has received positive feedback for the testbank that accompanies his Cengage book, and he is confident that an EP testbank will be a compelling USP.
