This application-oriented book introduces the associations between contact mechanics and friction and with it offers a deeper understanding of tribology. It deals with the associated phenomena of contact, adhesion, capillary forces, friction, lubrication, and wear from one consistent viewpoint. The author goesinto (1) methods of rough estimation of tribological quantities, (2) methods for analytical calculations which attempt to minimize the necessary complexity, (3) the crossover into numerical simulation methods. With these methods the author conveys a consistent view of tribological processes in various scales of magnitude (from nanotribology to earthquake research). Also, system dynamic aspects of tribological systems, such as squeal and its suppression as well asother types of instabilities and spatial patterns are investigated. This bookcontains problems and worked solutions for individual chapters in which the reader can apply the theory to practical situations and deepen the understanding of the material. The book presents the most important methods and results inthe field of tribology and related fields Many applications in different scales from micro to mega and in different fields are shown: contact, adhesion, seals, capillarity, lubrication, friction, and abrasion of elastic, plastic, andvisco-elastic bodies INDICE: Introduction.- Qualitative Treatment of Contact Problems - Normal Contact without Adhesion.- Qualitative Treatment of Adhesive Contacts.- Capillary Forces.- Rigorous Treatment of Contact Problems - Hertz Contact.- RigorousTreatment of Contact Problems - Adhesive Contact.- Contact between Rough Surfaces.- Tangential Contact Problems.- Rolling Contact.- Coulomb's Law of Friction.- The Prandtl-Thomlinson Model for Dry Friction.- Friction induced Vibrations.- Thermal Effects in Contacts.- Lubricated Systems.- Viscoelastic Properties of Elastomers.- Rubber Friction and Contact Mechanics of Rubber.- Wear.- Friction under the Influence of Ultrasound.- Numerical Simulation Methods in the Physics of Friction.- Earthquakes and Friction.- Appendix.- Further Reading.- Index of Figures.- Index of Subjects.
