Gerontology is the scientific study of the phenomenon and the process of ageing. It covers a wide range of aspects from the description of what happens in the body during ageing to the reasons and mechanisms of those age-related changes, and their clinical, psychological and social modulators and determinants. Gerontology is the most topical subject of scientific and social query in the 21st century. The major new developments in biomedical gerontology are our understanding of the evolutionary basis for limited lifespan and the mechanisms of ageing. This is mainly due to extensive studies on a variety of experimental model systems from bacteria and yeast to nematodes, fish, birds and mammals. Furthermore, new developments in the genetic basis of vulnerability and proneness towards one or more diseases during ageing, and the need of personalized treatment or management of age-related diseases has initiated several new lines of investigation both as the basic research level and at the clinical intervention level. The Encyclopedia of Biomedical Gerontology covers the biological and medical aspects of gerontology within the general framework of the biological basis of assessing age, biological mechanisms of ageing, age-related changes in biological systems, human age-related diseases, and biomedical practicality and impracticality of interventions, and ethics of intervention. The Encyclopedia of Biomedical Gerontology will stand alone from the Encyclopedia of Gerontology from 2007. The main difference between the 2nd edition of the Encyclopedia of Gerontology and the Encyclopedia of Biomedical Gerontology will be a shift in emphasis towards biomedical aspects of gerontology. The reason for this shift is much faster and significant developments have occurred in the biological and medical aspects of ageing, health and pathology, which require to be compiled in one resource for easy, reliable and practical access. Interdisciplinary coverage: 'one-stop' resource for access to information written by world-leading scholars in the field of Biomedical Gerontology that is not easily available elsewhere, with easy cross-referencing of related articles to promote understanding and further researchUp to date: The Encyclopedia fills a critical gap of information in a field that has seen significant progress in the last 10 yearsEnhanced content: multimedia features in the online version of the work offer accessible tools to readers looking to deepen their understanding INDICE: EVOLUTION AND BIODEMOGRAPHY AGEING PHENOTYPE MECHANISMS INTERVENTIONS
