Gerontology is the scientific study of the phenomenon and the process of ageing. It covers a wide range of aspects from the description of what happens in the body during ageing to the reasons and mechanisms of those age-related changes, and their clinical, psychological and social modulators and determinants. Gerontology is the most topical subject of scientific and social query in the 21st century. The major new developments in biomedical gerontology are our understanding of the evolutionary basis for limited lifespan and the mechanisms of ageing. This is mainly due to extensive studies on a variety of experimental model systems from bacteria and yeast to nematodes, fish, birds and mammals.
