In this book, the authors develop the technology of radar imaging, and an understanding of scattering concepts, in a manner suited to the mathematical background of most earth scientists. Such an approach enables the treatment to move quickly to the practical aspects of imaging, since it does not depend on early chapters that focus on electromagnetism rather than radar itself. The firstfive chapters of the book form a unit that covers the essential elements of imaging radar and its applications. The material is sufficient to gain a general understanding of remote sensing by imaging radar and to allow an appreciation of its characteristics compared with optical imaging. The formation of an image from received radar signals is a non-trivial task.
