Many fundamental and advanced image processing algorithms and pattern recognition techniques will be presented in this book to illustrate the framework. Itprovides technical assistances and practical tools in understanding and implementing the fundamental principles. The topics include basic image transformations, enhancement and segmentation techniques, multimedia signal processing using mathematical morphology, image representation, feature extraction, active learning, neural networks, fuzzy logic, pattern recognition, face recognition, document classification, image watermarking and steganography, solar image processing, and solar event detection. The principles of image processing and pattern recognition in this book are illustrated with plentiful graphs and examples in order to simplify the problems, so the readers can easily understand complicated theoretical background and applications. This book aims to provide students, researchers, and professionals the technical information regarding image processing and pattern recognition, as well as instruct them the fundamental theoretical framework in developing the extensive advanced techniques. By comprehensively understanding the essential principles of image processing and pattern recognition, the readers can not only easily implement and apply the algorithms and techniques, but also lead themselves into discovering new problems and applications.FRANK Y. SHIH is a professor jointly appointed in the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ. He is also Director of Computer Vision Laboratory. Dr. Shih is currently on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Pattern Recognition, theInternational Journal of Pattern Recognition Letters, the International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence, the International Journal of Recent Patents on Engineering, the International Journal of Recent Patents on Computer Science, the International Journal of Internet Protocol Technology, and the Journal of Internet Technology. He was the recipient of the Research Initiation Award from the National Science Foundation in 1991. His papers have been selected as the Best Paper Award from the International Pattern Recognition journal and the International conferences. He has received several awards for distinguished research at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Prof. Shih started the mathematical morphology research with applications to image processing, feature extraction, and object representation. He further advanced the field of solar image processing and feature detection. He, cooperating with Physics researchers, has made incredible contributions to fill in the gaps between Solar Physics and Computer Science. Prof. Shih has also made significant contributions to information hiding, focusing on the security and robustness of digital steganography and watermarking.
