This book serves as an introduction to the theory and applications of modeling and simulation in the realm of international studies. It is designed to provide an understanding of historical and contemporary global events and to represent those events in a scientific format. Attention is focused on understanding an event with an eye towards gathering empirical data to construct a model; understanding how to construct a model; understanding what model would best allow you to represent your data; and understanding how to analyze, verify, and validate the model that has been developed. The impetus for this book was the development of an academic course that integrates qualitative analysis of real-world events into quantitative, numeric representations of that data to produce models that enhance traditional social science modeling. The book is organized into three parts: Advancing International Studies introduces modeling and simulation and its role, provides a brief history of modeling and simulation, lists the many uses or applications of modeling and simulation, speaks to the advantages and disadvantages of using models in problem solving, defines International Studies, qualitative and quantitative research, and discusses how modeling and simulation can be used specifically in International Studies; Modeling Paradigms examines the following four methods of modeling: System Dynamic, Game Theory, Agent-based Modeling, and Social Network Modeling; and Principlesof Modeling and Simulation: Applications in International Studies introduces four real world events as case studies to which the four modeling paradigms can be applied.
