Modeling and simulation fundamentals: theoretical underpinnings and practical domains

This book discusses definitions, paradigms, applications, and sub-disciplinesas a way of detailing and reviewing the field of modeling and simulation. Twelve chapters are provided that build from topic to topic and include the foundational and theoretical underpinnings of modeling and simulation as well as related applications and practical domains. Chapter One provides an introductionto modeling and simulation including a brief history, terminology, and the applications and domains of modeling and simulation. Chapters Two through Four develop a three-part series of modeling and simulation paradigms starting with Chapter Two: Monte Carlo Simulations; Chapter Three: Continuous Simulation; and Chapter Four: Discrete Event Simulation. Chapters Five through Seven developanother three-part series of related areas starting with Chapter Five: Probability and Statistics (provides the mathematical background); Chapter Six: Modeling and Analysis (reviews model types and research methods); and Chapter Seven: Visualization and Management (discusses the importance of graphics). The next three chapters cover sophisticated methodologies, verification and validation, and advanced simulation techniques. The concluding two chapters cover an abstract use of modeling and simulation and the importance of interoperability.Chapter Eleven: Humans in Modeling and Simulation discusses the human-computer interface while Chapter Twelve: Interoperability introduces the methodologies and composability.John A. Sokolowski, PhD, is Research Professor and Director of Research at the Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center at Old Dominion University. Dr. Sokolowski is the author of numerous journal articles, and he received his PhD in Engineering with a concentration in modeling and simulation from Old Dominion University in 2003. Catherine M. Banks, PhD, is Assistant Research Professor and Director of Academic Services at the Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center at Old Dominion University. Dr. Banks received her PhDin 2004 from Old Dominion University.
