The Fabaceae (leguminosae) comprise the second largest family of flowering plants with 650 genera and 18000 species. The soybean is a member of the tribe Phaseoleae, the most economically important of the legume tribes. The soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. is the major source of vegetable oil and protein on earth. Soybean oil has garnered considerable recent attention due to its increased use for biodiesel production. The extensive genetic resources of soybean andthe associated physiological tools available present a set of unique opportunities to study everything from seed development to the biology of polyploidization to a huge array of pathogenic and symbiotic plant-host interactions. The large plant size of soybean is an advantage for such studies, permitting the use of techniques not easy or possible with smaller plants. For these and additional reasons, soybean genomic research has seen major advances in recent years. A comprehensive and timely reference on soybean genomics Only genomic resource of considerable interest to practicing plant biologists and geneticists, graduate and undergraduate students, and research professionals such plant breeders and germplasm curators who work on or are interested in legume species INDICE: Preface.- Soybean: Market driven research needs.- Soybean molecular genetic diversity.- Legume Comparative Genomics.- Phaseolus vulgaris: A diploid model for soybean.- The soybean molecular genetic Linkage map.- Soybean genome structure organization.- Sequence and assembly of the soybean genome.- Advances in soybean breeding.- Forward and reverse genetics in soybean.- Bioinformatic resources for soybean genetic and genomic research.- Genomics of soybean seed Development.- Genomics of soybean oil traits.- Genomics of secondary metabolism in soybean.- Genomics of fungal- and oomycete-soybean interactions.- Genomics of insect-soybean interactions.- Genomics of Viral-soybean interactions.- Genomics of soybean cyst nematode-soybean interaction.- Genomics of abiotic stress in soybean.- The global impacts of Roundup ready soybeans.
