He has been a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawasince 1980, where he has served terms as the Department Chair and Director ofthe Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His research interests include turbulence structure, turbulent diffusion, vortical flows, aerodynamics, biofluid dynamics, nuclear reactor thermal hydraulics andthe development of experimental methods. Professor Tavoularis is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering and a recipient of the George S. Glinski Award for Excellence in Research.
