In the 1990s, major advancements in seismic research greatly added to the understanding of earthquake fault systems as complex dynamical systems as large quantities of new and extensive remote sensing data sets provided information on the solid earth on scales previously inaccessible were integrated with a combination of innovative analysis techniques and advanced numerical and computational methods implemented on high-performance computers. Many of the resultingadvances and discoveries are included in or resulting from APEC (Asia PacificEconomic Cooperation) Cooperation for Earthquake Simulation (ACES) related research and activities. The ultimate goal of ACES is to develop a unified simulation model for earthquake cycles in different tectonic settings. INDICE: From the contents Finite Fault Modeling in a Tsunami Warning Center Context.- Interactive visualization to advance earthquake simulation;.- Modelling and visualization of tsunamis.- Geophysical Finite Element Simulation Tool (GeoFEST).- Multiscale brittle-ductile coupling and genesis of slow earthquakes.- Parallel fault systems with evolving self-similar sliding zones; Dysekin.- 3-D simulation of steady plate subduction with tectonic erosion: Current crustal uplift and free-air gravity anomalies in northeast Japan.- Development of long-period ground motions from earthquakes within the Nankai Trough, Japan: Observations and computer simulation of the 1944 Tonankai (Mw8.1) and 2004 SE off-Kii Peninsula (Mw7.4) earthquakes.- Modeling wing crack extension: Implications to the ingredients of discrete element model.- The solid earth research virtual observatory: Web services for managing geophysical data and applications.
