Stories as different as 'The Snowstorm', 'Lucerne', 'The Diaryof a Madman', and 'The Devil' are grounded in autobiographical experience. They deal with journeys of self-discovery and the moral and religious questioning that characterizes Tolstoy's works of criticism and philosophy.
