Since the method of solarthermal power generation is already the most competitive of solar technologies with the biggest potential to lower costs due to further technical improvements, its impact is going to increase even more in thecoming years - as with wind-driven plants, German contractors possess the necessary know-how for this technology - from plant constructors to glass producers - the dispute about the article of Prof. Walter Blum (Max-Planck-Institute Munich and chairman of the research group 'Energy' of the German Physical Society DPG) in the Physik Journal (see Physik Journal, December 2003, for the article and Physik Journal, February 2004, for Letters to the Editor) show the timeliness and importance of the topicWerner Vogel studied physics, chemistry and mathematics at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. He was involved there at the Institute of Applied Physics in research on solar hydrogen and fuel-cell power plants 1977-1979. Since 1980he has been a freelance researcher in the field of solar energy, especially solar thermal power plants. Henry Kalb studied physics and was involved in research on solar-hydrogen technology at the University of Karlsruhe from 1976 to 1980. Since 1980, he has been an independent researcher (System-Innovation Karlsruhe), specializing in the areas of solar energy, particularly solar thermalpower, and environmental technology.
