Mechanical Properties of Ceramics, Second Edition deals thoroughly with causes of mechanical failure of ceramics (including glass) and design for failure avoidance. Experimental facts and theoretical foundations for mechanical behavior are treated. Probabilistic and mechanistic methods of safe design are described and combined to provide design techniques both for moderate temperatures (brittle behavior) and high temperatures (creep behavior). The competing rolesof microstructure in weakening and toughening ceramics are explored and interpreted in terms of reliability improvement through processing for controlled and tailored microstructures. The first edition of the book contained both textbook explanations of fundamentals of mechanical properties of ceramics and descriptions of recent research, correlations and models. This new revision will still be able to be used as a reference book but its use as a textbook will beenhanced by using clarifiying sketches and explanations, adding more micrographs and descriptions of real materials within the body of the text and generally updating material.
