This book examines air pollution trends for the past 50 years and presents the status quo; though the main focus is on Mexico and Japan, it also includes discussions on the US and China. Analyzing data in model cities, it presents major findings from the joint Mexican-Japanese project SATREPS, in which identical measuring techniques and observational methods were applied to obtain comparable high-precision data. In addition to fundamental information on the state of the atmosphere, the latest monitoring data and original measured data are used to explain the ozone, VOCs and PM2.5 formation mechanisms in Mexico and Japan; further, co-beneficial countermeasure scenarios that can effectively improve regional and global atmospheric environmental conditions are proposed. Air pollution in megacity areas is a serious environmental issue that calls for prompt countermeasures. Importantly, recent issues reflect the non-linearity between emission intensity and environmental concentration levels, and the wide-ranging scale of temporal and aerial distributions. As such, a comprehensive understanding ranging from roadside air pollution to our global atmosphere is required. The book will help readers to understand air pollution formation mechanisms and countermeasure scenarios that are effective at both the regional and global scale.
