Industrial biotechnology: sustainable growth and economic success

Industrial Biotechnology is currently going through a strong growth phase, both in scientific possibilities as well as in industrial applications. Whereas other books on this topic are adressing only certain aspects or industries this book offers a comprehensive overview of industrial biotechnology, both in terms of technology, applications, economic potential and its implications for society. It is directed to readers with a general interest and professionals from academia and industry - but it will also serve as an introductory book to the wide range of technologies in industrial biotechnology. The editor and the majority of the authors are members of the European Federation of Biotechnology.Prof. Dr. Wim Soetaert, born 1964 in Belgium, studied chemical and agrochemical engineering at the Univerty Gent. After his PhD in 1991 he started his career in industry, and in 1998 he became Director R&D of Chamtor S.A., France. Since 2003 he is Professor at the University Gent - Laboratory for Industrial Microbiology and Biocatalysis. In 1993 and 1998 he received the European Cereal award for the development of new production technologies in biotechnology. He is board member of the European Biotechnology Platform and responsible for theco-ordination of the biocatalysis section within the European Federation of Biotechnology.
